4: Adult Lessons / Studio Policies & Costs
"Come friends, it's not too late to seek a newer world - to strive, to seek, to find but not to yield." -- from "Ulysses" by Lord Tennyson
Or, in other words - "Come on, let's try it! You really can teach an old dog new tricks." -- S.R.
Always wanted to learn how to play the piano? Parents made you take lessons years ago and now you want to try it again? Many adults, in their college years and beyond, decide to study piano and do so with great success. Adult piano lessons provide a wonderful way to relieve stress, learn a new skill or refresh an old one without the pressure of recitals, exams or grades. Making music helps all of us stay young in mind and heart. It's fun, personally satisfying and adds much to the enjoyment of life.
During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Virtual lessons with FaceTime or Zoom are encouraged and preferred. A return to in-person lessons will be considered when the infection rate remains at Level 1 or lower for 3-4 weeks. Masks and use of hand sanitizer are required. Piano contact surfaces and entry points are wiped with disinfectant before and after use.
Piano lessons for beginning to early advanced level adult students are once per week for 30, 45 or 60 minutes. Day and evening lesson times are available year round, Monday - Saturday. The lesson schedule is flexible to allow for work, travel, vacations and family activities. All lessons are private and take place in the Sharon Renkes Piano Studio, located in the Clintonville area of Columbus, Ohio. Free on-street parking and Wi-Fi are available. Acoustic and digital pianos plus rhythm instruments and music themed manipulatives are used during lessons by all students as needed.
The teaching atmosphere is calm, quiet, patient and joyful. Lesson content is age appropriate with specific teaching material chosen for each adult student based on unique learning styles, goals and needs. Music of the Classics, Broadway, Big Band, Ragtime, Sacred Worship and more are used to teach proper piano posture and gestures, body mechanics, note and rhythm reading, scales and harmony, playing from lead sheets, beginning composition and basic music history.
Daily home practice, 5-7 days/week for 30-60 minutes daily will bring you to your next lesson prepared for progress. A major component of any adult lesson will focus on how to practice your assigned music and technique pieces. (See related info on Page 7: Keys to Success. Several of these practice tips are helpful for adult students.)
All students must have an 88 key instrument in good working order in their home for daily practice between lessons - - either a tuned, acoustic piano and piano bench, or a digital piano with 88 full sized weighted keys, on legs or X-stand, a sustain (damper) pedal, a keyboard bench and power cord. Sharon can refer you to several local music instrument and piano retail centers if you wish to buy or rent a new or used acoustic or digital piano. Acoustic pianos do require professional tuning 1-2 times per year. Budget at least $100-$150 per tuning, payable to a Piano Tuner Technician of your choice. A keyboard with less than 88 keys is never acceptable. See related info on Page 6: Pianos vs. Keyboards.
Cancelation Policies: Lessons canceled by the teacher will be credited to the student's account if a rescheduled lesson cannot be arranged.
Lessons canceled by the adult student can often be rescheduled if the studio is notified in advance. No account credit will be given.
Piano Holidays: The teaching studio is always closed on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, The 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
