Her formal study of piano, organ, brass and voice continued from elementary school through the college level at Ohio Northern University. Classes included music theory and composition, piano, ear training and music history, piano pedagogy and special emphasis on music education for young children. Sharon continues her personal music education through workshops, conferences, discussion groups, attending concerts, professional reading, listening to and enjoying a worldwide variety of music styles, practicing the piano and exploring new music.
Professional performing experience includes church organist and pianist, accompanist for school groups, vocal choir member and soloist as well as brass choir and handbell participant. She has been the featured musician at large public social events and charity fundraisers. Her time spent as a volunteer at the James Cancer Hospital providing live piano music for patients, visitors and staff has been especially meaningful.
Sharon has 30+ years experience teaching piano, in private and group settings, to children, teens and adults with many different learning styles. Students are encouraged to expand their music experience by participating in school bands, orchestras and choirs, often continuing through college and into their post-graduate lives. Some have even chosen to make music their professional career as music educators, singers, composers, instrumentalists or by working in the music business industry.
Sharon came into the piano teaching profession through a career change. After 10+ years working as an RN, she returned to college as a music major at ONU. In 1987 Sharon and her family moved to Columbus, Ohio, where she was honored to teach with Dr. Lucy Chu for several years. Currently, she teaches solely as the Sharon Renkes Piano Studio.
Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, lessons are taught on-line via Zoom and FaceTime. A return to in-person lessons will be considered when Alert Guidelines are at Level 1 or lower.
